Product description

Also known as Rainbow Parrot Tulips, Rasta Parrot is a striking variety boasting unusual curled, lightly fringed petals patterned with vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow tinged with green and purple. Like the bird they are named after, Rasta Parrot Tulips bring a touch of exotic colour to beds, border, and patio pots. They reach up to 50cm tall and make excellent cut flowers for an eye-catching indoor display.

Available from early September to mid-December, these 11-12 sized Tulip bulbs are relatively simple to grow and care for. The ideal time to plant them is from September to October in pots or mid-October – December (after the first frost) in beds and borders. Choose a sheltered, sunny spot and dig a hole around 20cm deep in well-draining soil. Position the bulb in the hole and backfill with soil, gently firming down as you go, then water in well. Leave 10-15cm between bulbs to afford space for the roots to develop.

During the growing season, Tulips benefit from applying a high-potash fertiliser to help encourage an abundance of flowers from April to May. When the flowers begin to fade, deadhead spent blooms then allow the plant time to die back completely before removing the foliage. The bulbs can then either be dug up and stored for planting the next autumn or left in the ground to flower in the same place the following year.

Instructions

Top Tip

To extend bloom time, deadhead tulips after flowering and let the foliage die back naturally to nourish the bulbs for next year.

How to Water

Water tulips lightly after planting to settle the soil. Once they begin to grow, water regularly but avoid soggy conditions. Reduce watering once the flowers begin to fade, allowing the foliage to die back naturally.

How to Plant

Plant tulip bulbs in well-drained soil, 15-20cm deep and 4-6 inches apart. Choose a sunny location and ensure the pointed end of the bulb faces up. Plant in autumn for spring blooms, ensuring the soil is loose and well-drained.
