Product description

Tomato 'Vesuvius' F1 is a modern hybrid that captures the essence of a classic Italian 'winter' tomato with improved vigour and yield. This productive cordon variety grows as a tall vine, producing uniform trusses of small, distinctively pointed, pear-shaped red fruits. It combines the legendary long-keeping qualities and intense, rich flavour of the original with the reliability of an F1 hybrid, making it a truly exceptional choice for any vegetable garden.

To get an early start, sow 'Vesuvius' F1 seeds in small pots of compost under cover. Place them in a warm environment at around 20-22°C to speed up germination. Once seedlings have their first set of true leaves, transfer them to larger individual pots and grow them on in a bright, protected spot. Before planting outside, gradually harden off the young plants to acclimatise them to outdoor conditions after all risk of hard frost has passed.

Plant in a sunny, sheltered spot with fertile soil, spacing them 45-60cm apart. As the plant grows tall, it must be tied to a strong support like a cane or vertical strings to carry the weight of the crop. Water well and feed regularly with a high-potash liquid fertiliser once flowers appear. For the best and biggest trusses, it is vital to remove the small side shoots that form in the leaf axils, training the plant as a single main stem.
