Product description

This Sweet William 'Messenger Mixed' is a cherished cottage garden favourite, known for its delightful and spicy clove-like fragrance. It produces sturdy, upright stems that are perfect for adding height to the middle of a border and also make it an excellent, long-lasting cut flower. The plants are topped with large, rounded heads of flowers in a beautiful array of mixed colours, many with intricate patterns and contrasting eyes, which are irresistible to bees and butterflies.

Sow 'Messenger Mixed' seeds in trays of compost, covering them lightly, and keep them in a warm place at around 15-20C to help germination. Once the seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots or a prepared nursery bed to grow on and develop a strong root system. After this period of establishment, they will mature into robust plants ready to produce their impressive floral display.

Choose a site in full sun with well-draining, neutral to alkaline soil. Space the plants about 30cm apart to allow good air circulation and room to mature. Water regularly until they are well established, and during extended dry spells to ensure the best performance. To prolong the flowering season and encourage new blooms to develop, it is important to deadhead the faded flower clusters regularly throughout their display.
