Product description
This classic Sweet William 'Indian Carpet' is a dwarf variety, perfect for creating a rich carpet of colour at the front of borders, along paths, or in containers. Its low-growing, spreading habit becomes covered in dense clusters of fragrant, clove-scented flowers. The blooms come in a wide range of jewel-like colours, often with beautiful contrasting eyes, and are a magnet for pollinators like bees and butterflies.
Sow Sweet William 'Indian Carpet' seeds in trays of compost, covering them lightly, and keep in a warm place at around 15-20C to encourage germination. When the seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots or a nursery bed to grow stronger. After this period of establishment, the young plants can be moved to their final flowering positions in the garden.
Choose a site in full sun with well-draining, neutral to alkaline soil. Space the plants about 20-30cm apart to allow them to form a dense mat of foliage and flowers. Water regularly until they are well established. To prolong the flowering period and keep the plants looking tidy, it is important to deadhead the spent flower clusters. This will encourage the plant to produce a continuous and impressive display of blooms.
