Product description
This classic Sweet Marjoram is an essential aromatic herb, perfect for any kitchen or cottage garden. It forms a low-growing, bushy plant with small, oval, grey-green leaves that are prized for their wonderfully sweet and spicy fragrance and flavour. In addition to its culinary uses, it produces clusters of small white or pale pink flowers that are a magnet for pollinators, attracting bees and other beneficial insects to the garden.
Sow Sweet Marjoram seeds on the surface of compost in pots or trays under cover, as they need light to germinate. Keep them in a warm place at a temperature of around 15-20C. When the seedlings are large enough to handle, you can pinch out the growing tips to promote a bushier habit. Gradually acclimatise the young plants to outdoor conditions before moving them to their final growing position, but only after all risk of hard frost has passed.
Choose a warm, sheltered spot in full sun with light, very well-draining soil, as marjoram dislikes wet conditions. Space the plants around 20-30cm apart. Water them until they are well established, but be careful not to overwater thereafter. For the best flavour and to encourage a continuous supply of fresh foliage, it is essential to harvest the leaves regularly. This promotes new, bushy growth and prevents the plant from becoming woody.
