Skimmia Japonica, or more commonly known as the Japanese Skimmia, is an excellent dense evergreen shrub that is native to Japan and China. It has perfect mounding shape that makes it an ideal bush for borders. It features showy fragrant flowers over broad green leaves that give a scenic floral view during spring.  This is a carefree shrub that is tough and long-lasting, suitable for beginner gardeners.

Japanese Skimmia is a dioecious plant, it needs a female plant to produce red fruits in autumn. It is grown in a shady location where its leathery, oval to obovate dark green leaves with yellowish-green undersides can be appreciated. It blooms fragrant white flowers in rounded panicles at the tips of the branches. The red fruits that follow will ripen in October and persist through winters.

Skimmia Japonica will thrive in a moist fertile soil that is well-drained. It prefers shady areas but does well in the partial sun too. Avoid exposing them to full sun as that might cause the leaves to turn yellow or even burn.

Pruning Skimmia is not necessary but you can lightly trim after flowering to maintain the shape of the plant. Mix enough well-rotted compost with the potting soil when planting Skimmia in containers.

Skimmia Rubella is a great plant for woodland gardens or foundations. Use it in groups for hedges and shrub borders. Plant it in shady areas of your garden under taller trees. This ornamental shrub is extremely valuable for its multi-season garden interest.
