Product description

Cornus 'Baton Rouge' is a superb deciduous shrub, grown specifically for its incredible ornamental stems. Its true display begins after the leaves fall, revealing a dense thicket of brilliant, lipstick-red stems that light up the garden landscape. For the most intense colour, it should be pruned back hard after the harshest weather has passed to encourage a fresh flush of these vibrant new stems.

Cornus 'Baton Rouge' develops into a medium-sized, upright, and multi-stemmed deciduous shrub that is famously tough and very low-maintenance. It is highly adaptable, thriving in a wide range of conditions from sun to partial shade and is particularly tolerant of damp or poorly-drained soils where other shrubs might fail. Unlike shrubs that are pruned lightly for shape, 'Baton Rouge' must be pruned hard to get the best display of its vibrant red stems.

Please Note: When purchasing plants, please consider that each live item is unique and may therefore differ from the images shown, which are for illustration purposes only. The plant will be supplied in a growers pot. Depending on season, some plants may be pruned back to encourage growth and deciduous plants may arrive without leaves.

Top Tip

The most vibrant red stem colour appears on new growth on the Cornus Baton Rouge. To get a fantastic display, you must prune it hard after the harshest weather has passed, cutting the stems down close to the base.

How to Water

This dogwood Cornus Baton Rouge needs moist soil to thrive and does not like to dry out. It's a good choice for areas that are naturally damp, so be sure to water it well during any dry periods.

How to Plant

The Cornus Baton Rouge are famously tolerant of damp conditions. They are an excellent choice for a spot in your garden with heavier soil that stays moist.
