Flowerheads are bell-shaped opening to star-shape, often with a darker stripe running down the middle of each petal.
Wonderfully rich blue hues, Scilla Siberica has several elegant flowerheads that hand and nod in the breeze. Ensure that the plants are in moderately draining soils and with at least partial shade. Great for naturalizing open woodland and informal garden areas, can also be used well at the front of bed and border planting and very pleasant in rockeries.
Scilla is a variety of ornamental plant with origins in the Caucasus and Southwestern Russia to Turkey and is a part of the Asparagaceae Family, related to Asparagus. Clump-forming perennial that appreciates well-drained soils. Bell or star-shaped flowers are typically produced in shades of blue, with some varietals exhibiting more violet, white or pink colours.
Short stems or stalks form with racemes that produce multiple flowers, that are characterized by nodding flowerheads away from the central raceme. Flowerheads are usually bell-shaped and opening to a more star-like shape.
Plant Scilla 5-10cm deep in well-drained, medium-fertile soils that are in full sun to partially shaded areas. Excellent for rockery planting and for underplanting in areas that are to be naturalised. Clump-forming, Scilla Hyacinthoides will produce a number of bulbs or offshoots from the main bulb. Scilla is a hardy variety that can tolerate cold winter conditions and will be one of the early blooms of the spring.
Ornamental plants that are good for planting as highlights in an area of a garden or informal garden setting. During growth, regularly water Scilla, but avoid over-watering. With minimal amounts of basal foliage, allow the leaves to die back down after the flowering season in order to allow restorative energy gathering for the bulbs and future perennial growth.
