Product description
The Field Poppy is one of the most iconic and beloved annual wildflowers, designed to create a bold and dramatic splash of vibrant colour. It produces upright stems topped with flowers that have delicate, paper-thin petals of brilliant scarlet red, often with a dark blotch at their base. These simple, open-faced blooms are a classic feature of meadow-style plantings and provide an easily accessible source of pollen for bees and other vital pollinators.
For a successful display, these seeds must be sown directly onto the soil where they are to flower, as poppies resent root disturbance and do not transplant well. Prepare the ground by clearing it completely of other plants and raking the surface to a fine, crumbly texture. Scatter the fine seeds thinly across the soil and firm them down by treading lightly. Do not cover the seeds with soil, as they require light to help them germinate.
Choose an open site in full sun with poor to average, well-drained soil. Poppies flower best in less fertile conditions, so avoid adding any fertiliser or rich compost. No support or pruning is required for these self-sufficient plants. Water the area only if there is a prolonged dry spell after sowing. After the flowers fade, the distinctive "pepper pot" seed heads will form; allow these to mature and disperse their seeds naturally to create a new display.
