Product description

Add height and structure to your borders with these superb summer-flowering bulbs. Undemanding and easy to grow, Allium 'Big Impact Mixed' will give you a wonderful assortment of flower shapes, sizes and colours that are superb for cut flower displays. Don't forget that their attractive and architectural seed heads will also add autumnal interest later in the season.

Garden Care: Alliums thrive in light sandy, well drained soil in full sun. Avoid planting in cold wet soils as the bulbs are prone to rot in these conditions. Plant allium bulbs at a depth of 10cm (4") and a distance of 10cm (4") apart. A slow release fertiliser can be added to poor soils at the time of planting to improve fertility. When growing alliums, plant them where the leaves of other plants will cover the base of their stems. This will hide the old foliage which dies back before flowering begins.

Alliums require little maintenance. Leave stems of faded allium flowers intact to enjoy their spectacular seedheads in autumn. Divide overcrowded clumps of alliums after flowering. Caution: irritant to skin and eyes.

Instructions

Top Tip

Plant alliums alongside other leafy plants that can hide the faded allium foliage after flowering.

How to Water

Alliums grown in the ground are generally drought resistant and only need to be watered during dry spells. Those planted in pots or containers need to be watered regularly to ensure the soil doesn’t dry out. Avoid overwatering.

How to Plant

Plant allium bulbs in autumn before hard frosts set in. A sheltered, sunny spot in well-draining soil is ideal. Use a bulb planter or trowel to make holes 10-20cm apart and plant the bulbs around 15cm deep, one in each hole. Ensure the pointed end of the bulb faces upwards before backfilling the holes, firming the soil down gently as you go. Water in well.
