Long Purple is one of the most grown varieties of Aubergine, known for producing a high yield of nutritious fruits. The plant is dense and bushy with mid-green foliage, thick stems and small, star-shaped, purple flowers. The early-mid season variety bears medium-sized, glossy, dark purple fruits with prickly, dark green calyx.
Sow seeds from January to April. Plant the seeds at least 2cm apart in a seed tray or container, in a polytunnel, greenhouse or indoors. Once the seeds have developed at least two full leaves, the plants can be moved to grow bags, large containers, or a sheltered spot outside. Plant in a position will full sun, in a well-drained, fertile soil. Harvest from July to October. Aubergines are generally preferred when tender and smaller in size. The fruit should be dark purple, shiny and spongy-firm to the touch.
