Tomato 'Ailsa Craig' is a much-loved variety, celebrated by gardeners for its exceptional, traditional flavour. This highly productive cordon variety grows as a tall vine, producing heavy trusses of medium-sized, uniform, bright red fruits. It is an excellent choice for growing in a greenhouse or a very sunny, sheltered outdoor position, promising a rewarding and delicious harvest for any vegetable grower.

Sow 'Ailsa Craig' seeds in pots or trays of compost under cover, keeping them in a warm place at around 20-22C for reliable germination. When the seedlings have developed their first true leaves, carefully prick them out into individual pots and grow them on in bright conditions. Gradually acclimatise the young plants to outdoor conditions before moving them to their final growing position after all risk of frost has passed.

Choose a spot in full sun with rich, fertile, and well-draining soil. As a cordon type, it is essential to provide a tall, sturdy support, such as a cane or string, for the vine to be tied to as it grows. Space plants about 45-60cm apart. Water consistently and feed regularly with a high-potash fertiliser once the first fruits begin to form. To direct energy into fruiting, regularly pinch out the side shoots that appear between the main stem and leaf branches.
