Russian Tarragon is a robust and hardy perennial herb, valued for its vigorous growth and ease of cultivation in the garden. It forms an upright, bushy plant with slender, branching stems covered in long, narrow, light green leaves. The foliage has a mild anise-like flavour for culinary use, and while less intense than French tarragon, its reliability makes it a superb and permanent addition to any herb garden.
Unlike the French variety, Russian Tarragon is easily propagated from seed. Sow seeds in pots or trays, covering them lightly with compost, and keep them in a warm place at around 15-20C for good germination. Once the seedlings are established, you can pinch out the growing tips to encourage a bushier plant. Gradually acclimatise the young plants to outdoor conditions before moving them to their final position after all risk of frost has passed.
Choose a site in full sun with very well-draining, average-to-poor soil, as this plant thrives in dry conditions and dislikes wet roots. Space the plants about 45-60cm apart to allow them to reach their mature size. Water them well until they are established, but be careful not to overwater thereafter. To ensure a continuous supply of fresh leaves, harvest the stems regularly throughout the growing season, which encourages new growth and maintains a compact shape.
