Kobus is a Northern Japanese Magnolia variety with oval, bright green leaves to 15cm. From mid to late-spring, the tree is decorated with large, white, goblet-shaped flowers, each around 10cm across. These flowers appear on bare branches before the foliage emerges and are followed by ornamental pink fruits in summer, opening to reveal orange-red seeds inside.
Ideal for adding height interest to beds and borders, Magnolia trees also work as standalone statement plants. They grow well in pots and containers, making them a popular choice of patio tree.
Choose a sheltered spot and plant your Magnolia tree in full sun or partial shade in moist but well-draining soil. Protect the tree against late frosts, which may damage emerging flower buds in spring. Water regularly until established, then thoroughly but infrequently during dry spells. Lightly prune between mid-summer and early autumn to tidy the tree and remove any dead or damaged branches.
