Sorbus aucuparia is a fabulous tree that offers a contrast of bright red and luscious white as the seasons change. In late spring and early summer, it bursts with clusters of delicate white flowers. The tiny, single, creamy-white blooms appear all over the tree and attract an abundance of insects and birds with their delicate, sweet scent.
Spring also brings the appearance of the foliage which adds an element of bright green with pinnate leaves that are pointed at the tips and serrated at the edges. In autumn, the leaves turn to a stunning display of fiery colours in deep red and burnt orange. Adding to the exotic look in autumn are the rich deep red berries that hang in abundant clusters from the branches. They do not last too long, so if you want to try your hand at making Rowan jelly, be sure to pick them speedily as soon as they are ripe. Rowan jelly makes the perfect accompaniment for venison, game and roast lamb. The berries are also packed with Vitamin A and C, great to add to a healthy diet.
Sorbus aucuparia is a fully hardy tree that is tolerant of a large range of conditions. It enjoys full sun and prefers moist but well drained soil. It will grow to a broad-headed shape about 6m in height.
Plant the tree singly or in groups for a dramatic effect. This stunning tree offers all year round interest and is a must-have for your garden.
