Product description

Tall spikes of soft lemon-yellow flowers make Verbascum Citrus Champagne easy to spot in a summer border. The flowers open in succession along the upright stems, rising from a neat rosette of green leaves and giving the plant plenty of height without taking up much room at ground level. Also known as Mullein, it is a useful choice for adding structure among lower-growing perennials and the flowers are popular with bees and other pollinating insects.

Citrus Champagne is happiest in full sun and well-drained soil, and it is one of those plants that becomes very easy to manage once it has settled in. It naturally copes with dry conditions, so it is well suited to sunny borders where plants are not being watered constantly. After flowering, the tall stems can be cut back to keep things tidy, or left in place for a while if you prefer a little more structure towards the end of the season.

Please Note: When purchasing plants, please consider that each live item is unique and may therefore differ from the images shown, which are for illustration purposes only. The plant will be supplied in a growers pot. Depending on season, some plants may be pruned back to encourage growth and deciduous plants may arrive without leaves.

Instructions

Top Tip

Once the main flower spike has finished, cut it back to just above a healthy side shoot rather than removing the whole stem at ground level. This can encourage Mullein to produce shorter side spikes, extending the flowering display.

How to Water

Water Mullein thoroughly after planting, then let the soil dry slightly before watering again. Once established, it is quite drought tolerant, so regular watering is rarely needed unless there is a prolonged period of hot, dry weather.

How to Plant

Give Mullein a sunny position with plenty of space around it, ideally in light, well-drained soil that will not stay wet through winter. For container growing, use a free-draining compost and a deep pot to give the plant's roots room to develop.
