Instructions

Top Tip

Pinch back the tips of Tradescantia stems regularly to encourage bushy growth and prevent leggy, sprawling stems. Rotate the plant occasionally to ensure even growth on all sides. For a fuller display, propagate cuttings by placing them in water until roots develop, then plant them back into the same pot to create a lush, dense appearance.

How to Water

Water Tradescantia regularly, keeping the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. During the growing season (spring and summer), water when the topsoil feels dry to the touch. In autumn and winter, reduce watering to prevent root rot, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Use lukewarm water to avoid shocking the plant, and ensure any excess water drains away freely.

How to Plant

To plant Tradescantia, select a bright location with indirect sunlight and well-draining soil. Use a standard potting mix with added perlite or sand for improved drainage. If planting in a container, ensure it has drainage holes to avoid waterlogging. Gently remove the plant from its pot and loosen the roots. Plant it at the same depth as it was in its nursery pot and backfill with soil, pressing lightly to secure. Water thoroughly after planting and position it in a warm, sheltered spot.
