Planting density

Pro Tip: Double Up for Density

For a hedge that truly blocks out wind and noise, opt for a double row. Planting your hedging in a staggered zigzag pattern creates a wider, more stable foundation. It is the best way to get maximum coverage and density, especially if you are planting deciduous species.

Product description

Thuja Smaragd is a brightly coloured evergreen conifer that has a neat, upright and conical shape. It develops dense, vibrant emerald green aromatic foliage that is tipped with a deep bronze colour, giving off almost a golden glow in winter, a few of these planted in a row will eventually grow to make a fine inter-locking screen hedge.

These hardy plants are very easy to maintain, requiring little to no pruning and do best in fully sunny positions within well-drained soil, but can be planted in most . Looks fabulous as part of a rockery garden or in a container.

Instructions

Top Tip

Prune Thuja in early spring to maintain a tidy shape and encourage dense growth. Avoid cutting too much off the top, as this can damage the plant’s natural form.

How to Water

Water Thuja regularly, especially during dry spells, to keep the soil moist. Ensure good drainage to prevent waterlogging, which can cause root rot. Once established, Thuja is drought-tolerant but still benefits from occasional deep watering.

How to Plant

For Thuja, choose a sunny or partially shaded spot with well-draining soil. Dig a hole twice as wide and the same depth as the root ball. Place the plant, backfill with soil, and firm gently. Water thoroughly after planting. Space plants 90-150cm apart for privacy screens or hedges.
