Thalictrum Fairy Wings has a graceful, open look, with small pink and white flowers held on tall, slender stems above finely cut green foliage. Also known as Meadow Rue, it brings useful height to the garden without creating a dense mass, so the planting around it can still be seen. The flowers have a light, natural feel and are also useful for cutting, making this a good choice for both borders and summer vase arrangements.
Meadow Rue thrives in partial shade and prefers fertile soil that holds some moisture while still draining well. Once established, it is fairly easy to look after, although taller stems may appreciate a little support in exposed positions. It works particularly well towards the middle or back of a border, where the flower stems can rise through lower planting and add another layer of interest without taking over.

Leave Meadow Rue alone for a little longer in autumn than you might with a plant that collapses quickly. Once the stems have dried, their fine structure can catch frost and provide useful late-season interest before being cut down in winter or early spring.

Meadow Rue appreciates a steady supply of moisture while it is getting established, especially through warm or dry periods. Once settled, check the soil regularly and give it a thorough soak when it starts to dry, rather than watering little and often.

Thalictrum settles well into fertile, moisture-retentive soil, so work some well-rotted organic matter into poorer ground before planting if needed. Set Meadow Rue into its new position at the same depth as it was growing in its pot, then firm the surrounding soil gently and water it in well.
