Product description

Salvia Black and Blue is all about the flowers, with deep blue blooms emerging from dark, almost black calyces along the upright stems. They stand out particularly well against the fresh green foliage, and the contrast gives this Anise-Scented Sage a distinctive look without needing much else around it. It also has a pleasant anise-like fragrance, adding another reason to grow it where the plant can be enjoyed up close. This eye-catching variety flowers for a long period through summer, with the tubular blooms proving popular with bees and other pollinating insects.

A sunny border with free-draining soil gives Anise-Scented Sage the conditions it needs to get on with growing, and once established it needs relatively little attention. Keep it watered during prolonged dry spells and remove spent flower stems to encourage further blooms as the season goes on. It can also be grown in a container, where the upright stems and unusual colouring make it an easy plant to pick out among the rest of the display.

Please Note: When purchasing plants, please consider that each live item is unique and may therefore differ from the images shown, which are for illustration purposes only. The plant will be supplied in a growers pot. Depending on season, some plants may be pruned back to encourage growth and deciduous plants may arrive without leaves.

Instructions

Top Tip

Don't be too quick to move it into a bigger pot. Anise-Scented Sage generally flowers better when it has filled its container reasonably well, so only pot it on when the roots have genuinely become crowded. Moving it into an oversized pot can leave a lot of unused compost holding moisture around the roots.

How to Water

While Salvia is settling in, check the compost regularly and give it a thorough watering whenever the surface begins to dry. Once established, it can cope with short dry spells, but a good soak during prolonged hot weather will help it keep producing flowers without leaving the soil constantly wet.

How to Plant

Before planting, improve heavy soil with plenty of organic matter and grit so excess water can drain away freely. Set Anise-Scented Sage into its new position at the same depth as it was growing in its pot, then firm the soil around the roots and water it in thoroughly.
