Product description

Pittosporum 'Golf Ball' is a fast-growing, evergreen shrub renowned for its naturally compact, perfectly spherical habit that rarely requires clipping to maintain its shape. The dense structure is thickly covered in glossy, mint-green leaves that provide vibrant year-round colour, while late spring brings inconspicuous purple-brown flowers that emit a sweet honey fragrance to attract pollinators. Highly versatile and visually impactful, this shrub serves as an excellent low-maintenance alternative to traditional boxwood topiary for patio containers, structural borders, or low hedging.

When establishing your new shrub, choose a position that offers full sun or partial shade in a sheltered location to protect the pristine foliage from cold, drying winter winds. It thrives in a variety of soil types, including sand, loam, and chalk, provided the earth remains moist but well-drained throughout the year. Once fully rooted, the plant becomes reasonably drought-tolerant and requires very little upkeep, though a light trim in late spring can be applied to refine its naturally rounded outline and encourage denser growth.

Depending on seasonality, deciduous plants may be supplied in their dormant state and without leaves. Plants may also be pruned back, lower than stated heights, to encourage new growth.

Instructions

Top Tip

Although Pittosporum 'Golf Ball' naturally develops a tight, spherical habit without the need for heavy pruning, you can give it a light trim in late spring to maintain an impeccably neat outline. As a borderline hardy evergreen, planting this shrub in a sheltered location protected from cold, drying winter winds will keep its bright foliage looking pristine year-round.

How to Water

Give your Pittosporum 'Golf Ball' a thorough soaking immediately after planting to settle the earth and eliminate any air pockets around the roots. Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged during its first growing season by watering directly at the base, noting that the plant will become reasonably drought-tolerant once fully established.

How to Plant

Select a sunny or partially shaded spot with well-drained soil and dig a hole that comfortably fits the root ball of your Pittosporum 'Golf Ball'. Carefully place the shrub so the base of the stem sits perfectly level with the surrounding ground, then backfill and lightly firm the soil to secure it.
