Product description

Commonly known as the Obedient Plant, 'Bouquet Rose' features upright, square stems topped with dense, spike-like racemes of tubular, bright rosy-pink flowers. It earns its common name because the individual flowers are hinged and will temporarily stay in whatever position they are pushed, making it an amusing novelty in the garden.

This plant is highly vigorous and can become invasive if not kept in check, as it spreads rapidly via underground stolons. It thrives in full sun and prefers consistently moist soil; to keep it under control, divide the clump aggressively every year or plant it in a large, sunken container to restrict its roots.

Please Note: When purchasing plants, please consider that each live item is unique and may therefore differ from the images shown, which are for illustration purposes only. The plant will be supplied in a growers pot. Depending on season, some plants may be pruned back to encourage growth and deciduous plants may arrive without leaves.

Instructions

Top Tip

Despite the common name "Obedient Plant," Physostegia roots are ruthless invaders; you must ruthlessly rip out the wandering white rhizomes every single spring, or it will completely choke out the rest of your garden bed.

How to Water

Physostegia loves consistently moist soil. Water regularly to keep the ground from drying out, especially in full sun. While it can handle damp feet, it is not drought-tolerant and will wilt if left parched.

How to Plant

Plant this aggressively running perennial Physosegia in an area where you don't mind it taking over, or physically bury a plastic barrier or large bottomless pot into the dirt to corral its roots. It adapts to almost any soil type but grows thickest in rich, damp loam.
