Top Tip
Leave some of the late flower stems standing after the main display has finished. Dry Beardtongue seedheads can add useful structure through autumn and into winter, particularly in a more naturalistic border, before being cut back in spring.
How to Water
Water Penstemon thoroughly after planting, then keep the soil lightly moist while it establishes, particularly during warm or dry weather. Once settled, it copes well with short dry spells, but give it a good soak when the soil has dried out rather than watering little and often.
How to Plant
Pick a sunny or partially shaded position with fertile, well-drained soil, then work in some compost or well-rotted organic matter if the ground is poor. Plant Penstemon at the same depth as it was growing in its pot, firm the soil gently around the roots, and water thoroughly to help it settle.
