Austrocylindropuntia subulata is fascinating for its vigorous, cylindrical stems that feature persistent, fleshy green leaves near the growing tips, hiding sharp yellow spines underneath. It is frequently referred to as "Eve's Needle" because of the long, sharp thorns that protrude aggressively from the stem. It grows much faster than most other cacti and can become quite shrub-like.
Place this cactus in a bright, sunny location to prevent the heavy stems from becoming weak and flopping over. It needs a very gritty, free-draining cactus mix to prevent root rot. Because it becomes tall and top-heavy very quickly, it is best planted in a heavy, wide-based pot, and you may need to prune it aggressively to keep it contained.

Rotate your pot by a quarter turn every time you water. Opuntia subulata naturally lean towards the strongest light source, which can cause them to grow crooked. Regular rotation ensures the plant receives even light exposure on all sides. This helps it maintain a straight, symmetrical shape as it matures.
How to Water
Adopt the 'Soak and Dry' method to mimic the Opuntia subulata natural environment. Water the soil thoroughly until excess water flows freely from the drainage holes, then discard any saucer water immediately. Allow the soil to dry out completely from top to bottom before watering again. If you are ever unsure, wait a few more days; it is always safer to be too dry than too wet.
How to Plant
Always select a container with sufficient drainage holes to prevent root rot. Use a specialized 'Cactus & Succulent' potting mix or create your own blend by mixing 50% compost with 50% grit. When handling the Opuntia subulata, protect your hands by using kitchen tongs or a thick folded towel. Plant the cactus at the same depth it was in its previous pot, as burying the green stem can lead to rot. Finish with a top dressing of gravel to keep the plant's base dry.
