Product description

Opuntia microdasys var. pallida is beloved for its pale, lime-green pads that contrast vividly with bright golden-yellow dots. The botanical name pallida refers to the lighter, fresher green tone of the pads compared to the standard species. It forms a dense, shrubby mound over time and is armed with the same deceptive glochids as other Opuntias.

Ideally, position this cactus in a bright, sunny location to ensure the yellow glochids remain vibrant. Use a specialized cactus soil with added pumice or gravel for best results. Water strictly only when the soil is bone dry, as this desert native is extremely drought tolerant and prefers to be underwatered rather than overwatered.

Please Note: When purchasing plants please consider that each live item is unique and may therefore differ from the images shown, which are for illustration purposes only. Decorative pot not included, the plant will be supplied in a growers pot. Depending on season, some plants may be pruned back to encourage growth and deciduous plants may arrive without leaves.

Instructions

Top Tip

Rotate your pot by a quarter turn every time you water. Opuntia microdasys var. pallida naturally lean towards the strongest light source, which can cause them to grow crooked. Regular rotation ensures the plant receives even light exposure on all sides. This helps it maintain a straight, symmetrical shape as it matures.

How to Water

Adopt the 'Soak and Dry' method to mimic the Opuntia microdasys var. pallida natural environment. Water the soil thoroughly until excess water flows freely from the drainage holes, then discard any saucer water immediately. Allow the soil to dry out completely from top to bottom before watering again. If you are ever unsure, wait a few more days; it is always safer to be too dry than too wet.

How to Plant

Always select a container with sufficient drainage holes to prevent root rot. Use a specialized 'Cactus & Succulent' potting mix or create your own blend by mixing 50% compost with 50% grit. When handling the Opuntia microdasys var. pallida, protect your hands by using kitchen tongs or a thick folded towel. Plant the cactus at the same depth it was in its previous pot, as burying the green stem can lead to rot. Finish with a top dressing of gravel to keep the plant's base dry.
