Product description

The genus, Nephrolepis delivers the Boston Fern as a striking, evergreen fern with a reputation that makes it one of the most sought-after houseplants. When placed in a porch or living room, this plant will sit perfectly, and its frilly fronds will make it stand out. It will reach an ultimate height and spread of 0.5-1m over a 5-year period. For pruning, you should remove any dead fronds from the Fern, and you should situate the plant in a pot, in partial shade.

Please Note: Images are for illustrative purposes only and designed to be a representation of the item(s) being sold. Depending on seasonality, deciduous plants may be supplied in their dormant state and without leaves. Plants may also be pruned back, lower than stated heights, to encourage new growth.

Level of Care
Boston Ferns thrive in bright, indirect light or partial shade, making them ideal for humid indoor spaces. Keep the soil consistently moist but avoid overwatering—water when the top 1–2cm of soil feels dry. High humidity is essential, so mist the leaves regularly, use a humidity tray, or place the plant in a naturally humid area like a bathroom. Feed with a diluted liquid fertiliser every 4–6 weeks during the growing season to encourage lush fronds. Avoid placing the fern near radiators or air conditioning vents, as dry air can cause browning. Trim away any yellow or dead fronds to keep the plant looking fresh and healthy.

Instructions

Top Tip

To keep your Boston Fern lush and healthy, place it in a humid environment like a bathroom or kitchen. If the air is too dry, mist the fronds regularly or use a humidity tray to prevent browning and crisping of the leaves!

How to Water

Water Boston Fern when the top 1–2cm of soil feels dry, keeping the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Use room-temperature, filtered, or dechlorinated water to prevent leaf tip browning. Water deeply until excess drains out, but never let the plant sit in standing water. In warmer months, water several times a week to prevent drying out, while in winter, reduce watering but never allow the soil to become completely dry. Maintain high humidity by misting regularly, placing a humidity tray nearby, or using a room humidifier.

How to Plant

Plant a Boston Fern (Nephrolepis exaltata) in a well-draining, moisture-retentive soil mix, ideally a peat-based potting mix with added perlite. Choose a pot with drainage holes to prevent waterlogging. Position it in bright, indirect light or partial shade, avoiding direct sunlight, which can scorch the delicate fronds. When planting, ensure the crown of the fern (where the fronds emerge) sits just above the soil surface. Water thoroughly after planting, keeping the soil consistently moist but not soggy. For outdoor planting, select a sheltered, shaded spot with rich, well-draining soil. Maintain high humidity to help the fern establish and thrive.
