Neoraimondia herzogiana is a robust, tree-like cactus from Bolivia known for its impressive, sturdy columns that act as a dominant vertical feature. It features deep ribs and formidable spines that develop on older areoles, giving the plant a rugged, ancient appearance even when relatively young. While it can grow extremely large in the wild, it stays manageable in a container for many years.
This species requires full sun for vigorous growth and strong spine development. It needs a coarse, rocky soil mix that does not compact over time, and a heavy pot to prevent it from tipping over as it grows tall. Water deeply but infrequently, ensuring the soil is completely dry to the touch before watering again.

Regular rotation ensures the plant receives even light exposure on all sides. This helps it maintain a straight, symmetrical shape as it matures.
How to Water
Adopt the 'Soak and Dry' method to mimic the Neoraimondia herzogiana natural environment. Water the soil thoroughly until excess water flows freely from the drainage holes, then discard any saucer water immediately. Allow the soil to dry out completely from top to bottom before watering again. If you are ever unsure, wait a few more days; it is always safer to be too dry than too wet.
How to Plant
Always select a container with sufficient drainage holes to prevent root rot. Use a specialized 'Cactus & Succulent' potting mix or create your own blend by mixing 50% compost with 50% grit. When handling the Neoraimondia herzogiana, protect your hands by using kitchen tongs or a thick folded towel. Plant the cactus at the same depth it was in its previous pot, as burying the green stem can lead to rot. Finish with a top dressing of gravel to keep the plant's base dry.
