Product description
Mammillaria spinosissima 'Rubra' is distinct for its dense covering of vibrant, coppery-red spines that wrap around the cylindrical body, giving it a glowing appearance when backlit. It is affectionately referred to as the "Red-Headed Irishman" due to this intense colouration, which contrasts strikingly with the ring of bright purple-pink flowers it produces. It typically grows upright, often forming attractive clumps at the base as it matures.
Ideally, position this cactus in a spot with strong, direct sunlight to ensure the spines maintain their vivid red hue. Use a gritty, mineral-based substrate with excellent drainage. Water sparingly only when the soil is completely dry, and always apply water directly to the soil rather than overhead, as the dense spine cover can trap moisture.
Please Note: When purchasing plants please consider that each live item is unique and may therefore differ from the images shown, which are for illustration purposes only. Decorative pot not included, the plant will be supplied in a growers pot. Depending on season, some plants may be pruned back to encourage growth and deciduous plants may arrive without leaves.
House Plant Size Guide

House plants come in a wide array of shapes and sizes depending on the variety and maturity of the plant.
6cm/12cm/15cm/19cm/23cm nursery pots are the most common size of pot that they are sold in. This measurement is the diameter at the top of the pot.
12cm potted plants are the most popular providing great value for money and an instant impact. Larger plants that come in pots of 20cm+ are great for making a statement in any room and can represent years of growth to get to that level of maturity and size.

Top Tip
Rotate your pot by a quarter turn every time you water. Mammillaria spinosissima rubra naturally lean towards the strongest light source, which can cause them to grow crooked. Regular rotation ensures the plant receives even light exposure on all sides. This helps it maintain a straight, symmetrical shape as it matures.
How to Water
Adopt the 'Soak and Dry' method to mimic the Mammillaria spinosissima rubra natural environment. Water the soil thoroughly until excess water flows freely from the drainage holes, then discard any saucer water immediately. Allow the soil to dry out completely from top to bottom before watering again. If you are ever unsure, wait a few more days; it is always safer to be too dry than too wet.
How to Plant
Always select a container with sufficient drainage holes to prevent root rot. Use a specialized 'Cactus & Succulent' potting mix or create your own blend by mixing 50% compost with 50% grit. When handling the Mammillaria spinosissima rubra, protect your hands by using kitchen tongs or a thick folded towel. Plant the cactus at the same depth it was in its previous pot, as burying the green stem can lead to rot. Finish with a top dressing of gravel to keep the plant's base dry.
