Mammillaria backebergiana subsp. ernestii is a cylindrical cactus that often starts growing upright but tends to lean or trail as it matures and lengthens, making it suitable for hanging baskets or tall pots. It is known for producing a beautiful "crown" of bright pink flowers in a ring around the top of the plant, usually appearing in late winter or spring. The spines are dense and yellowish-brown, covering the plant in a protective mesh.
Position this plant in bright light to encourage flowering and compact growth. Use a free-draining cactus mix and be careful to avoid getting water on the body of the plant, as moisture trapped between the dense spines can cause rot. Allow the soil to dry out fully between waterings, reducing water significantly in the resting period.
