Product description

Sage 'Blackcurrant' is a popular perennial herb, famously prized for the incredible, true-to-name blackcurrant scent of its foliage. The primary part used for its aromatic value is its small, rounded leaves, which release a powerful, fruity fragrance when brushed against or crushed. While the leaves can be used in teas or desserts, the plant is also grown for its stunning flowers; the attractive, bright red or pink tubular flowers are also edible and make a beautiful garnish.

When it comes to planting and maintenance, this is an easy-to-grow, shrubby perennial, but it has very specific, non-negotiable requirements. It is extremely fussy about its light conditions and absolutely must have a location in full, direct sun to thrive and flower well. The main requirement for it to grow successfully is providing it with soil that is exceptionally well-drained, as it strongly dislikes "wet feet" and is very drought-tolerant once established. As an added benefit to the garden, its prolific, attractive flowers are known to be a major favourite of bees and hummingbirds.

Instructions

Top Tip

The fruit scent of Sage 'Blackcurrant' is largely lost upon drying, so always use this herb fresh for the best sensory experience. It makes a fantastic, unexpected addition to fruit jams; try adding a finely chopped tablespoon to the pot just before potting up strawberry or raspberry jam.

How to Water

Water Sage 'Blackcurrant' regularly while it is establishing, then reduce frequency as it matures. Allow the soil surface to dry out between waterings to simulate its native environment.

How to Plant

Select a warm, sheltered position in full sun for Sage 'Blackcurrant' and plant in well-drained soil, protecting it from cold winds.
