Product description

Crambe cordifolia is a towering, deep-rooted architectural giant that instantly commands attention as the undisputed focal point of any large border. It builds an enormous basal clump of massive, highly textured cabbage-like foliage before erupting into a gigantic, branching 2-metre framework that holds tens of thousands of tiny, pure white flowers, projecting a heavy, sweet honey fragrance.

You must backfill the cavernous planting hole with nutrient-rich loam to physically support the immense weight and explosive growth rate of this giant. Water it deeply and regularly during its first two years to build its structural mass, after which it becomes highly self-sufficient. Aggressively protect the massive emerging leaves from slugs and snails early on, and leave the gigantic skeletal flower stalks standing for spectacular, frost-covered architectural interest.

Please Note: When purchasing plants, please consider that each live item is unique and may therefore differ from the images shown, which are for illustration purposes only. The plant will be supplied in a growers pot. Depending on season, some plants may be pruned back to encourage growth and deciduous plants may arrive without leaves.

Instructions

Top Tip

The absolute best tip for managing Crambe cordifolia is to aggressively police the area for slugs and snails early on. These pests will completely shred the enormous emerging leaves if you do not implement strict physical barriers or traps. Leave the massive, skeletal flower stalks standing through the dormant period to provide spectacular, frosty architectural interest in your borders.

How to Water

Flood the root zone heavily upon planting to ensure Crambe cordifolia establishes its deep foundation as quickly as possible. During the first two years, you must water it deeply and regularly to help build enough mass to support future blooms. Once the tough woody crown is fully mature, the plant becomes highly self-sufficient and requires very little supplemental hydration.

How to Plant

Excavate a massive hole for Crambe cordifolia in a west-facing border where it will be sheltered from highly destructive gales. Backfill the hole with deep, nutrient-rich loam to properly support the gigantic, towering structure it will eventually build. Space this giant well away from smaller delicate plants, as the massive cabbage-like leaves will completely smother anything planted underneath.
