Product description

Bergenia Baby Doll boasts a striking contrast between its bold, glossy, evergreen leaves and delicate blush-pink flowers, which appear in branching clusters above the foliage in spring. The reddish flower stems add another layer of colour, while the rounded leaves give the plant a substantial, almost architectural look. Also known as Elephant’s Ears, this perennial makes a strong addition to borders and containers, particularly where a reliable clump of foliage is needed alongside seasonal flowers.

For the best display, give Bergenia a spot in full sun or partial shade and plant in fertile, well-draining compost with enough moisture to prevent the soil from becoming completely dry. Once flowering is over, remove the spent stems and any damaged leaves, leaving the healthy foliage to maintain the plant’s shape and presence.

Please Note: When purchasing plants, please consider that each live item is unique and may therefore differ from the images shown, which are for illustration purposes only. The plant will be supplied in a growers pot. Depending on season, some plants may be pruned back to encourage growth and deciduous plants may arrive without leaves.

Instructions

Top Tip

Bergenia is naturally tough and does not need regular feeding, even in less-than-perfect soil. An annual mulch of well-rotted organic matter is more useful than repeated doses of fertiliser, while slightly poorer conditions can encourage stronger winter leaf colouring.

How to Water

Bergenia benefits from regular watering while it establishes, particularly during warm or dry weather. Once settled, allow the surface of the soil to dry slightly between waterings, then water thoroughly without leaving the roots sitting in excess moisture.

How to Plant

Choose a spot in full sun or partial shade with fertile, well-draining soil, then dig a hole slightly wider and deeper than the root ball. Place Bergenia at the same depth as it was growing in its container, backfill with soil, firm gently around the base, and water thoroughly to help it settle in.
