Product description
Selaginella Apoda, commonly known as Meadow Spikemoss, is a houseplant with vibrant green foliage. The leaves are densely packed together, showing off a stunning array of greenery for such a small plant.
Originating from the eastern states of the USA and also found in Mexico and Guatemala makes this variety very well travelled. It also means it requires a lot of humidity and high moisture to thrive, so misting is essential when caring for it.
The foliage creates a mass of small leaves that are great for filling areas of your home with an added spark. Any indoor space should be able to give this Selaginella ample shade as it will appreciate these conditions.
Growing your Selaginella from its baby stage into a mature, healthy plant is all part of the journey that brings joy to all levels of plant enthusiasts up and down the country.
It’s not unusual to give your plant a name… so don’t hesitate to choose one that you think suits the plant! Try naming your plant with the first name or word that you think of when you look at it - that’s how we ended up with an orchid named Clover and spider plant called Joseph.

Top Tip
Selaginella thrives in high-humidity environments, making it an excellent choice for terrariums or shaded areas with consistent moisture. To enhance humidity around the plant, place it on a tray of water with pebbles or group it with other moisture-loving plants. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight, which can scorch the delicate foliage, and prune any brown or dried leaves to encourage lush, vibrant growth.
How to Water
Selaginella requires regular watering to maintain its moisture-loving nature. Keep the soil consistently damp but not waterlogged, as excessive water can lead to root rot. Water deeply during dry periods or when grown indoors, ensuring even hydration. Misting the foliage regularly can also help maintain the high humidity levels Selaginella prefers. Always water early in the morning or late in the evening to minimise evaporation and ensure the plant absorbs moisture effectively.
How to Plant
To plant Selaginella, choose a location with moist, well-draining soil enriched with organic matter. These plants thrive in partial to full shade, making them ideal for shaded garden areas or terrariums. Prepare the soil by mixing in compost or peat to retain moisture, and dig a hole just large enough to accommodate the root ball. Position the plant carefully, ensuring the crown is at soil level, then backfill gently. Water thoroughly after planting and keep the soil consistently moist to promote healthy establishment.
