Product description

Black Pearls is a charming Astilbe cultivar that suits almost any outdoor space. Lush dark green foliage gives way to upright stems bearing feathery plumes of bright purple flowers during the summer months. These spikes of tiny flowers give off a cottage garden vibe and are well suited for flower beds and borders.

Also known as False Goat’s Beard, Astilbe is an undemanding plant that requires very little maintenance to flourish. These outdoor plants prefer reliably moist soil where they thrive in full sun or partial shade. Planted in drier soil types, they prefer shade, growing well in less bright parts of the garden.

Water Astilbes generously during dry spells and cut back to ground level in winter. These herbaceous perennial plants die back over the colder months before sprouting back to life the following spring. This cultivar reaches an eventual height of up to 60cm and spread of up to 45cm.

Please Note: Images are for illustrative purposes only and designed to be a representation of the item(s) being sold. Depending on seasonality, deciduous plants may be supplied in their dormant state and without leaves. Plants may also be pruned back, lower than stated heights, to encourage new growth. This plant will be supplied in a growers pot.

Instructions

Top Tip

Plant alongside other shade-tolerant plants, such as hostas, for a striking display.

How to Water

Water generously and regularly for the first year then only during dry spells when the soil starts to dry out.

How to Plant

Dig in plenty of garden compost and plant in spring or autumn in rich, moist but well-draining soil. Astilbes grows in full sun but flourishes best when planted in partial shade. Create a hole slightly wider than the root ball and position the plant before backfilling, firming gently as you go. Water in well after planting.
