Product description

Known for its classic, striking bi-coloured petals, Aquilegia caerulea is a traditional favourite that brings an elegant blue and white display to shaded areas. The long, delicate spurs on the back of the blooms are specifically evolved to attract long-tongued pollinators looking for deep nectar reserves.

This variety demands a spot with partial shade and thrives in standard, well-balanced garden loam. Keep the soil evenly damp and direct your watering can strictly at the base of the stems to keep the delicate foliage completely dry and free from powdery mildew.

Please Note: When purchasing plants, please consider that each live item is unique and may therefore differ from the images shown, which are for illustration purposes only. The plant will be supplied in a growers pot. Depending on season, some plants may be pruned back to encourage growth and deciduous plants may arrive without leaves.

Instructions

Top Tip

Keep a sharp eye out for leaf-miner trails disfiguring the delicate foliage of your Aquilegia caerulea. If you spot those winding white lines, ruthlessly cut the affected leaves all the way back to the base. The crown will quickly push out a fresh, pristine flush of bluish-green growth to replace them.

How to Water

Immediately collapse any hidden air pockets around the roots of Aquilegia caerulea with a heavy dose of water. Check the ground periodically, providing a deep soak only when the top layer feels noticeably dry to the touch. Keep the hose nozzle low to the ground to keep those iconic bi-coloured flowers completely dry.

How to Plant

Position Aquilegia caerulea in a woodland border where its classic blue and white petals will stand out. Loosen the native soil thoroughly and dig a pocket wide enough to spread the roots out laterally. Backfill carefully, pressing down just enough to secure the plant without compacting the dirt into concrete.
