Product description

This magnificent biennial or short-lived perennial boasts towering, architectural spires packed with tightly ruffled, peony-like double blooms. The warm, peach-apricot tones of the flowers create a highly sought-after vintage aesthetic, contrasting beautifully against the plant’s rough, deeply lobed, pale-green foliage. Originating from a lineage of classic cottage garden favourites developed in the 19th century, this specific variety is unparalleled for creating vertical structure and visual weight at the very back of a sun-drenched floral border, acting as a living wall of colour that draws the eye upward.

The massive, densely petaled flower heads hold a significant amount of water after heavy rain, the towering stems become exceptionally top-heavy and prone to snapping. To prevent catastrophic breakage, you must securely tie the main stalk to a thick bamboo cane or sturdy trellis using soft garden twine, adjusting the ties as the plant grows. Additionally, to ward off the notorious rust fungus that plagues this family, water strictly at the soil level to keep the foliage dry, and ensure you mix plenty of rich organic compost into the planting hole to fuel its rapid vertical growth.

Please Note: When purchasing plants, please consider that each live item is unique and may therefore differ from the images shown, which are for illustration purposes only. The plant will be supplied in a growers pot. Depending on season, some plants may be pruned back to encourage growth and deciduous plants may arrive without leaves.

Instructions

Top Tip

Insert a tall bamboo stake near the base right when you plant it. Tying the thick stem to this support prevents the heavy double blooms from snapping in high winds. Removing faded blossoms encourages the Alcea Chater's Double Apricot to channel energy into opening new buds.

How to Water

Provide a deep soak immediately after placing the Alcea Chater's Double Apricot in the ground. Direct your watering can exclusively at the base of the stem to keep the foliage perfectly dry. Maintain consistent soil moisture during the first few weeks of active establishment.

How to Plant

Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball to allow for easy expansion. Place the Alcea Chater's Double Apricot so the crown rests exactly at soil level. Backfill gently and press down firmly to eliminate any air pockets around the roots.
