Product description

This classic Chinese species is famous for delivering the ultimate "shock and awe" floral display, erupting with massive, highly fragrant mauve-lilac blossoms on completely bare wood before any leaves appear. It is one of the fastest, most aggressively growing vines on the planet, capable of putting on several meters of thick growth in a single season.

To care for the Chinese wisteria, you must pay attention to its anti-clockwise twining habit when tying in young shoots. It demands the hottest, sunniest wall you have to bake the wood and set its flower buds. Because of its extreme vigour, your summer pruning must be absolutely ruthless; if you fail to cut back the whippy green growth, it will quickly swallow your gutters and refuse to flower.

Please Note: When purchasing plants, please consider that each live item is unique and may therefore differ from the images shown, which are for illustration purposes only. The plant will be supplied in a growers pot. Depending on season, some plants may be pruned back to encourage growth and deciduous plants may arrive without leaves.

Instructions

Top Tip

This Chinese variety naturally twines anti-clockwise. As the Wisteria sinensis blooms on bare wood before the leaves arrive, make this your front-of-house showpiece for maximum visual impact.

How to Water

To water Wisteria sinensis, soak deeply once a week in year one to build strong roots. Once mature, let the topsoil dry out, but keep it moist while its early spring tassels develop. Always water the base.

How to Plant

To plant Wisteria sinensis, dig a hole twice as wide as the rootball but exactly the same depth. Enrich the excavated soil with a generous scoop of compost to ensure a nutrient-rich loam. Place the vine in the hole, making absolutely sure the knobbly graft union sits safely above the soil line. Backfill firmly, tie the main stem anti-clockwise to your framework, and water deeply to settle the roots.
