Product description

This is the pure species form of the Kentucky Wisteria, celebrated for its rugged resilience and beautiful, lilac-purple flower clusters. It is slightly less aggressive than its Asian cousins, making it a bit more manageable for the average garden, though it still grows with impressive speed. It is a late bloomer, which guarantees its fragrant blossoms are safe from sudden, unexpected temperature drops.

To care for this vine, ensure it is planted in a sun-drenched location with soil that drains away excess moisture quickly. It will need a sturdy pergola or a system of galvanized wall wires to climb safely. While slightly tamer, it still demands the standard Wisteria discipline: a harsh summer prune to restrict its size and force flower bud production, followed by a structural winter prune while the plant is completely dormant.

Please Note: When purchasing plants, please consider that each live item is unique and may therefore differ from the images shown, which are for illustration purposes only. The plant will be supplied in a growers pot. Depending on season, some plants may be pruned back to encourage growth and deciduous plants may arrive without leaves.

Instructions

Top Tip

Due to the Wisteria macrostachya blooming later in the season on "new wood", you don't have to stress about late spring frosts ruining your floral show.

How to Water

To water Wisteria macrostachya, soak deeply once a week in year one to build strong roots. Once mature, let the topsoil dry out, but keep it moist while its late-season buds develop. Always water the base.

How to Plant

To plant Wisteria macrostachya, dig a hole twice as wide as the rootball but exactly the same depth. Enrich the excavated soil with a generous scoop of compost to ensure a moisture-retentive loam. Place the vine carefully, ensuring the crown rests perfectly level with the surrounding soil surface. Backfill firmly, secure the main stem to your support structure, and water it thoroughly to settle the roots.
