Planting density

Pro Tip: Double Up for Density

For a hedge that truly blocks out wind and noise, opt for a double row. Planting your hedging in a staggered zigzag pattern creates a wider, more stable foundation. It is the best way to get maximum coverage and density, especially if you are planting deciduous species.

Product description

Ligustrum vulgare is commonly known as 'Wild Privet' it is an extremely popular semi-evergreen hedge that displays deep green foliage in spring along with white flowers that attract butterflies and bees. Ligustrum will often keep it's leaves unless it is hit by a hard frost and in that case they will drop all foliage. In autumn you get the attractive black berries that are a great source of food for many species of wild birds. This plants bushy habitat makes a great safe nesting place for wild birds .

Wild Privet prefers well-drained chalky soil, however will do fine in any type of soil as long as you avoid very wet conditions. Ligustrum grows at around 1-2 feet per year but can be pruned to a manageable size.

Instructions

Top Tip

Ligustrum responds well to pruning. Regular trimming helps maintain a compact, dense shape and encourages fuller growth.

How to Water

Water Ligustrum regularly, especially during dry periods. Ensure the soil is moist but not waterlogged. Once established, they are fairly drought-tolerant but benefit from consistent moisture for optimal growth.

How to Plant

Choose a spot in full sun or partial shade and plant privet in moist, well-draining soil. Soak the roots while you dig a V-shaped trench, allowing plenty of space for the roots to spread out. You may wish to use a piece of string to ensure the trench is straight. Lightly trim the roots to promote fresh growth and position them in the trench, allowing 30-50cm between plants. It’s worth noting that plants spaced closer together will form a dense hedge quicker. Backfill the trench with soil and compost, firming down gently as you go, and water in well.
