Product description

Trained into an elegant standard tree, the Viburnum 'Eskimo' is a perfect eye-catcher, providing year-round structure for any garden space. Its compact, rounded head of handsome, dark green foliage is semi-evergreen, meaning it often holds its leaves through milder winters. Its true moment of glory is in late spring when it produces a wealth of large, snowball-like flower heads. These emerge from pink-tinged buds and open into fragrant, pure white globes, creating a spectacular display that is highly attractive to spring pollinators like bees.

You can enhance your Viburnum 'Eskimo' patio tree by planting companions around its base, creating a fuller, multi-level arrangement in your container. The key to success is selecting partners that thrive in the same conditions: a spot in either full sun or partial shade, with a fertile, moist but well-drained soil. This Viburnum dislikes drying out, so its companions must also appreciate consistent watering during the growing season. For a beautiful foliage combination, consider a Hosta with variegated leaves, such as 'Patriot' or 'Francee'. Their bold, patterned leaves will contrast beautifully with the Viburnum's simpler dark green foliage and will thrive in the cool, moist conditions at the base of the pot.

Please Note: When purchasing plants, please consider that each live item is unique and may therefore differ from the images shown, which are for illustration purposes only. The plant will be supplied in a growers pot. Depending on season, some plants may be pruned back to encourage growth and deciduous plants may arrive without leaves.

Instructions

Top Tip

The number one rule is pruning time. Only prune, if necessary, immediately after the flowers have faded in early summer. If you prune it at any other time, especially in spring, you will cut off all the flower buds for that year.

How to Water

Keep the soil consistently moist, especially for the first couple of years and during dry spells. Container plants will need regular watering from spring to autumn. Apply a general-purpose balanced fertiliser around the base of the plant in early spring. This is the most important point. It requires very little pruning. Only trim to shape or remove dead/crossing branches immediately after it has finished flowering in early summer. Pruning at any other time, especially spring, will remove the flower buds for the following year.

How to Plant

Choose a spot in full sun or partial shade. If planting in a pot, select a large, stable container and use a soil-based (loam-based) compost as it retains moisture well. If planting in the ground, dig a hole twice the width of the rootball. Improve the excavated soil by mixing in well-rotted compost or manure. Place the plant in the hole so the top of its rootball is level with the surrounding soil. Backfill with the improved soil, firm it in gently to remove air pockets, and water thoroughly.
