Product description

This ornamental Fleeceflower is a vigorous, bushy perennial known for its highly attractive, lance-shaped green leaves that are frequently marked with dark, reddish-brown chevrons. In late summer, it produces masses of narrow, upright, poker-like spikes of tiny, bright crimson-red flowers that provide a long-lasting splash of vibrant colour.

It is an incredibly tough and adaptable plant that thrives in full sun or partial shade and prefers moist, fertile soil. It has a spreading habit and can be quite robust; chop it back hard to control its size if it begins to dominate the border, and divide the large clumps every few years.

Please Note: When purchasing plants, please consider that each live item is unique and may therefore differ from the images shown, which are for illustration purposes only. The plant will be supplied in a growers pot. Depending on season, some plants may be pruned back to encourage growth and deciduous plants may arrive without leaves.

Instructions

Top Tip

As Persicaria plants expand rapidly through underground creeping roots, take a sharp spade to the edges of the clump every spring to aggressively chop away the runners and keep it contained to its designated footprint.

How to Water

Persicaria thrives in consistently moist to boggy soil. Water regularly to ensure the ground never dries out, especially in sunnier spots. While some types tolerate average soil, most bloom best with frequent, deep watering.

How to Plant

Dig a hole in moist, fertile ground and amend the backfill heavily with compost to give this vigorous grower plenty of fuel. Persicaria plants are an enthusiastic spreader, so give it a wide berth and keep it away from small, delicate neighbors that it could easily overwhelm.
