Product description

Garden Mint is a robust and widely grown variety cultivated primarily for the bright, refreshing spearmint flavour found in its serrated green leaves. This classic taste, which is crisp and clean without being overly pungent, is released instantly when the leaves are muddled or chopped. It is traditionally used as the versatile workhorse of the herb garden, perfect for making mint sauce to accompany lamb, boiling with new potatoes and peas, or garnishing summer drinks like Pimm's and iced tea.

This plant is typically grown as a hardy perennial that spreads aggressively via underground runners, rapidly forming a dense patch if left unchecked. It is extremely tough and frost-tolerant, dying back in winter before emerging with vigour in spring. For the best results and high yields of leafy growth, plant it in a location with partial shade, though it tolerates sun well if kept damp. It is not drought-tolerant and thrives in fertile, moisture-retentive soil that is kept consistently moist through regular watering.

Instructions

Top Tip

Garden Mint is the quintessential "thug" of the herb world - it will invade every inch of your garden if you let it. Always plant it in a container, even if you wish to place it in a border. Sink the pot into the ground with the rim slightly raised to contain the roots and stop runners from escaping.

How to Water

Garden Mint loves moisture and will become woody, rust-prone, and sparse if allowed to dry out. Water it generously and frequently, particularly during dry spells or if it is pot-bound, to ensure the leaves remain succulent and tender.

How to Plant

Plant Garden Mint in rich, loamy soil that holds water well. It is best suited to a pot or a confined raised bed to restrict its spread. If the plant becomes too pot-bound after a couple of years, pull it out, divide the rootball into quarters, and replant just one section with fresh compost.
