Top Tip
The number one rule is pruning time. Only prune, if necessary, immediately after the flowers have faded in early summer. If you prune it at any other time, especially in spring, you will cut off all the flower buds for that year.
How to Water
Keep the soil consistently moist, especially for the first couple of years and during dry spells. Container plants will need regular watering from spring to autumn. Apply a general-purpose balanced fertiliser around the base of the plant in early spring. This is the most important point. It requires very little pruning. Only trim to shape or remove dead/crossing branches immediately after it has finished flowering in early summer. Pruning at any other time, especially spring, will remove the flower buds for the following year.
How to Plant
Choose a spot in full sun or partial shade. If planting in a pot, select a large, stable container and use a soil-based (loam-based) compost as it retains moisture well. If planting in the ground, dig a hole twice the width of the rootball. Improve the excavated soil by mixing in well-rotted compost or manure. Place the plant in the hole so the top of its rootball is level with the surrounding soil. Backfill with the improved soil, firm it in gently to remove air pockets, and water thoroughly.
