Product description

The Japanese Sweet Balloon Berry, also known as the Strawberry-Raspberry, is a hardy, thorny shrub that produces large, red berries with a sweet and tangy flavour. Originating from Japan, this unique plant combines the qualities of strawberries and raspberries, making it an excellent choice for fresh eating, cooking, and preserves. The shrub blooms with large white flowers in the spring, followed by a harvest of flavourful berries from late summer into autumn.

This shrub grows up to 150cm tall and 60cm wide, making it suitable for ground cover and ornamental use in gardens. It thrives in well-drained, fertile soil and prefers full sun to partial shade. Regular watering, particularly during the fruiting season, ensures healthy growth and a good berry yield. With its unique combination of flavours and attractive appearance, the Japanese Sweet Balloon Berry is a valuable addition to any garden.

Instructions

Top Tip

For the sweetest flavour, wait until the bright red berries on the Japanese Sweet Balloon Berry deepen to a dark crimson and pull away effortlessly from the stem. These delicate fruits are delicious eaten fresh or cooked down into unique jams and jellies.

How to Water

Keep the soil consistently moist, especially when the large fruits are developing, as dry roots can cause berries to drop. Check your Japanese Sweet Balloon Berry daily during warm spells, but ensure excess water always drains away freely to prevent root rot.

How to Plant

Plant Japanese Sweet Balloon Berry in fertile, well-drained soil in a sunny or lightly shaded spot. As it spreads rapidly via underground runners, it is best grown in large containers or raised beds to keep it contained. If planting in open ground, use a root barrier to prevent it from taking over.
