Product description

The deep purple foliage of Heuchera Black Forest Cake lives up to its name, with rich chocolate tones that make the leaves particularly eye-catching. In summer, delicate sprays of small cherry-red, bell-shaped flowers rise on fine stems, creating a bright contrast against the dark leaves and bringing a softer touch to the plant's overall look. A Coral Bells variety, this is a neat, hardy perennial that works particularly well in shaded borders, under taller plants, and in containers.

A spot in partial shade or dappled light suits Coral Bells well, along with fertile soil that holds some moisture but still drains freely. The compact growth means it can be used to soften the edges of paths, steps, or raised beds, where the foliage can be appreciated at close quarters. Once established, it is fairly easy to look after, with watering only really needed during prolonged dry spells.

Please Note: When purchasing plants, please consider that each live item is unique and may therefore differ from the images shown, which are for illustration purposes only. The plant will be supplied in a growers pot. Depending on season, some plants may be pruned back to encourage growth and deciduous plants may arrive without leaves.

Instructions

Top Tip

Give Coral Bells a spring tidy with scissors rather than pulling old leaves away by hand. The stems can be surprisingly firm where they join the crown, and pulling at them can disturb the plant just as the new growth is getting started.

How to Water

Water Coral Bells thoroughly after planting, then keep the soil lightly moist while it establishes, particularly during warm or dry weather. Once settled, allow the surface to dry slightly between waterings and avoid leaving the roots sitting in waterlogged compost.

How to Plant

Give Coral Bells a position in partial shade or dappled light, ideally in fertile soil that holds some moisture while still draining well. For containers, use a good-quality, free-draining compost and a pot with enough room for the plant to develop comfortably.
