Product description

Thyme 'Pink Chintz' is a popular perennial herb, famously prized for its ornamental value as a flowering groundcover, creating a dense, low mat smothered in bright, salmon-pink flowers. The primary parts used for its culinary value are its tiny, fuzzy, grey-green leaves, which provide a mild, classic thyme fragrance and flavour. However, its edibility doesn't stop there; the attractive pink flowers are also edible and make a beautiful, delicate garnish.

When it comes to planting and maintenance, this is an easy-to-grow, creeping, mat-forming perennial, but it has very specific, non-negotiable requirements. It is extremely fussy about its light conditions and absolutely must have a location in full, direct sun to thrive and flower profusely. The main requirement for it to grow well is providing it with soil that is exceptionally well-drained, as it strongly dislikes "wet feet" and is very drought-tolerant once established. As an added benefit to the garden, its mass of attractive flowers is known to be a major favourite of bees.

Instructions

Top Tip

Thyme 'Pink Chintz' is the most durable variety for planting between flagstones, but ensure the soil level is slightly lower than the stone surface to protect the crown from being crushed by heavy boots. Its woolly leaves trap dust, so give it a gentle spray with a hose during dry spells to keep the foliage clean.

How to Water

Thyme 'Pink Chintz' is highly drought-resistant and should be watered very lightly, only when absolutely necessary. Ensure sharp drainage prevents water from pooling around the crown of the plant.

How to Plant

Plant the mat-forming Thyme 'Pink Chintz' in full sun with sharp drainage, ideal for rock gardens or crevices. Ensure the foliage is not swamped by surrounding plants and keep the soil on the drier side to prevent rot.
