Product description

Mint 'Buddleia' is a popular perennial herb, highly prized for its ornamental flower spikes as well as its culinary value. The primary part used in the kitchen is its soft, grey-green leaves, which provide a sweet and fruity mint flavour, perfect for making teas, jellies, and mint sauces. However, its most striking feature is its long, tapering, lilac-purple flowers, which resemble those of a butterfly bush and are also edible, making them a beautiful garnish.

When it comes to planting and maintenance, this is an easy-to-grow, spreading perennial that is very adaptable. It is not fussy about its light conditions and will thrive in locations with either full sun or partial shade. The main requirement for it to grow well is providing it with soil that is kept consistently moist. Like all mints, it is highly invasive, so it is crucial to grow it in a container or with root barriers to stop it from spreading. As a major added benefit, its attractive flowers are extremely popular with pollinators, particularly bees and butterflies.

Instructions

Top Tip

The long, elegant flower spikes of Mint 'Buddleia' last surprisingly well in water, making them an unusual but fragrant addition to cut flower arrangements. Leaving the faded stems standing through winter provides valuable shelter for hibernating insects in the hollow stems.

How to Water

Mint 'Buddleia' is a moisture-loving plant that should never be allowed to dry out completely. Water efficiently at the base to keep the roots cool and damp, which supports its tall growth habit.

How to Plant

Choose a damp, partially shaded or sunny location for Mint 'Buddleia' and plant in a container to contain its vigorous, spreading root system. Keep the soil consistently moist to support the tall flower spikes and silvery foliage.
