Product description

Better known as Witch Hazel, Hamamelis Westerstede is a hardy flowering garden shrub. The mid-dark green foliage is serrated and turns a pretty shade of yellow for incredible autumn colour interest. Before the new leaves emerge in spring, masses of golden yellow flowers cover the bare branches from early spring. These blooms are lightly scented and boast chocolatey brown sepals at the base.

Witch hazel is a low maintenance, undemanding shrub that thrives without much attention. It prefers neutral to acidic, moist but well-draining soil and flourishes in full sun or partial shade. Hamamelis Westerstede has an attractive shape and only needs pruning when dead or damaged branches need to be removed.

Please Note: When purchasing plants, please consider that each live item is unique and may therefore differ from the images shown, which are for illustration purposes only. The plant will be supplied in a growers pot. Depending on season, some plants may be pruned back to encourage growth and deciduous plants may arrive without leaves.

Instructions

Top Tip

Plant Hamamelis in autumn or early spring to allow roots to establish before extreme temperatures. Prune after flowering to shape and remove deadwood.

How to Water

Water deeply and regularly during the first growing season to establish roots. Once mature, water during extended dry periods, ensuring the soil remains consistently moist but not waterlogged.

How to Plant

Plant Hamamelis in well-draining, slightly acidic soil in a spot with full sun to partial shade. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball, set the plant at the same depth as in its pot, and backfill gently. Add mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
