Product description

Better known by the common name Witch Hazel, Hamamelis Diane is an excellent shrub for brightening up the winter garden. Blooming from January to March, it provides plenty of texture and colour interest throughout the greyest months of the year. Lush green foliage emerges in spring, turning dramatic shades of red and yellow in autumn before the orange-red flowers bloom after Christmas.

These hardy shrubs are easy to grow and demand very little maintenance to look their best. Water Hamamelis thoroughly after planting and once a week until well-established, after which it only needs to be watered during particularly dry spells. Lightly prune in spring to tidy the shrub and remove any dead or damaged branches.

Position your Witch Hazel plant in a sheltered spot that enjoys full or partial sun, ideally in slightly acidic, moist but well-draining soil. These striking winter plants are most often planted in flower beds and borders but grow well in pots too.

Depending on seasonality, deciduous plants may be supplied in their dormant state and without leaves. Plants may also be pruned back, lower than stated heights, to encourage new growth.

Instructions

Top Tip

Plant Hamamelis in autumn or early spring to allow roots to establish before extreme temperatures. Prune after flowering to shape and remove deadwood.

How to Water

Water deeply and regularly during the first growing season to establish roots. Once mature, water during extended dry periods, ensuring the soil remains consistently moist but not waterlogged.

How to Plant

Plant Hamamelis in well-draining, slightly acidic soil in a spot with full sun to partial shade. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball, set the plant at the same depth as in its pot, and backfill gently. Add mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
