Product description
Elaeagnus ebbingei, often known as Oleaster, is an excellent evergreen for creating a hedge that stays full, glossy and good looking all year round. The leaves have a lovely silver flecked underside that catches the light, and in autumn the plants produce small, sweetly scented flowers that are easy to miss but smell fantastic. Tough, fast growing and happy in coastal or windy spots, it brings reliable structure and privacy to the garden.
Planting Oleaster is straightforward. Space the young plants around 60-90cm apart so they have room to fill out while still growing together into a solid hedge. If you’re aiming for a really thick screen, a staggered double row works well and gives you quicker coverage. Loosen the soil before planting, set each plant at the same depth it was growing in the pot, and firm the ground gently around the roots.
Once in the ground, these hedging plants are easy to look after. Keep the soil moist during the first year to help the roots establish properly, and water along the whole line during dry spells. A light trim in late spring and again towards the end of summer or early autumn keeps the hedge neat and encourages dense, bushy growth. Once established, Elaeagnus ebbingei forms a resilient, handsome hedge that continues to perform season after season
Please Note: When purchasing plants, please consider that each live item is unique and may therefore differ from the images shown, which are for illustration purposes only. The plant will be supplied in a growers pot. Depending on season, some plants may be pruned back to encourage growth and deciduous plants may arrive without leaves.

Top Tip
Don’t rush to prune Oleaster in the first year. Giving the plants time to focus on root growth before any shaping helps them develop into a stronger, fuller hedge later on.
How to Water
Water Oleaster with a deep soak rather than frequent light splashes, as this encourages the roots to grow downwards and makes the hedge far more resilient. During the first year, keep the soil consistently moist in dry spells, watering along the full length of the hedge so each plant establishes evenly.
How to Plant
Plant Elaeagnus ebbingei by digging a hole just wide enough for the rootball and setting the plant in at the same depth it was growing in the pot. Backfill with the soil you removed, firm it gently around the roots, and water the whole line well to help everything settle in.
